AWEX launches Step-Up Bonus to accelerate certified wool supply

The Australian Wool Exchange (AWEX) has announced the launch of the Step-Up Bonus – a new initiative rewarding and supporting wool growers who adopt Australian Wool Sustainability Scheme (AWSS) Certification.

The Step-Up Bonus represents a direct investment by AWEX in Australian wool growers, supporting the industry’s commitment to sustainability, integrity, and meeting the expectations of global markets.

AWEX CEO Charlie McElhone said the initiative addresses a clear industry priority: to increase the volume of certified wool available to buyers.

“Our international customers are asking for more certified wool. Through the Step-Up Bonus we are directly supporting growers who are certified with AWSS, helping the Australian industry meet this demand with an efficient, made-for-Australia certification,” Mr McElhone said.

The Australian Wool Sustainability Scheme (AWSS) is Australia’s recognised sustainability certification standard for wool. It provides assurance of sustainable, traceable, and high-quality production practices, while reflecting Australia’s unique production systems, stringent regulations, and industry best practice.

The Step-Up Bonus will apply from 1 July 2025 and be delivered through the AWSS Partner Program.

AWEX Sustainability & Integrity Manager Brydie Creagh said the initiative is designed to build scale and momentum for certified wool.

“This is about recognising the leadership of growers who choose to get certified with AWSS and rewarding them for their role in shaping the future of our industry,” Ms Creagh said.

“By providing a bonus for AWSS certified bales sold at auction, we aim to increase the volume of certified wool available to customers and strengthen Australian wool’s position in global markets.”

Growers can participate in the Step-Up Bonus by applying through their selling agent.
