 British Wool – Sale Report (BW213 – 27th January 2026)

 The British Wool sale on 27th January mirrored the strong trade in New Zealand over the last two weeks with the market trading up by 10%. All core types traded dearer with the prices of major British Wool grades matching those of equivalent NZ types. The sale was competitive from the outset, opening 5% higher and quickly strengthening to trade 10% dearer. Both UK processors and export customers were active throughout the sale with all participants securing wool. Clearance was 100%.

The British Wool index was up 9.5% sale on sale at 2.093 in BW213. The average greasy sale price increased by 7.6% versus the sale on January 13th to reach £1.347 per kg.

In real terms (inflation adjusted) prices are now equivalent to pre-pandemic levels. The offer comprised the full cross section of UK wool types. Core grades of carpet wool were particularly well sought after, with some types trading as much as 12% dearer towards the end of the auction. As has been the case for some time combing types traded in line with carpet wools.

British Wool’s intake volume this season is down by 4% year-on-year, and expectations remain for the total supply of wool this season to be several hundred tonnes lower than last year. We estimate that approximately 58% of the anticipated supply for the current clip year has already been sold. The volumes sold, clearances by wool type, and price changes in BW213 were as below. The next British Wool sale is in two weeks’ time on 10th February.
